St. Clair County in southwest Illinois reports 76 new coronavirus cases, 1 more death
St. Clair County announced 76 new cases Saturday and one additional death, a woman in her 70s with underlying health conditions.
The number of people hospitalized for coronavirus-related reasons, a total of 50, was the highest since June 11, said Samantha Bierman, St. Clair County Health Department emergency response coordinator.
The county saw 9.4% of tests come back positive Saturday, a decrease from 11% Friday. The region, which includes St. Clair, Madison, Randolph, Clinton, Monroe, Washington and Bond counties, was at a 7.1% positivity rate as of Saturday, an increase from 7% on Tuesday, according to state statistics.
Gov. J.B. Pritzker has said the state will implement restrictions for businesses if the region reaches a positivity rate of 8% or more for three consecutive days.
“It’s going in the wrong way,” said St. Clair County Emergency Management Agency Herb Simmons, adding that he and other officials continue to urge residents to wear masks, avoid large crowds, stay socially distanced and wash their hands frequently.
The southwestern Illinois region saw a total of 238 additional cases.
Numbers update from Illinois
The state announced 1,426 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Saturday and 12 additional virus-related deaths for a total of 169,883 cases and 7,397 deaths since the pandemic began.
