COVID-19 positivity rate for Region 4 in southwest Illinois remains the same Saturday
The positivity rate for COVID-19 testing in the Metro-East Region 4 stayed the same Saturday after eight consecutive days of decreases, according to public health officials.
The state reported the region’s rolling seven-day average positivity rate remained at 8% on Saturday, still lower than the 8.4% rate the region saw on Thursday.
The positivity rate is the percentage of coronavirus tests that are positive. The rate the state calculates is based on a week’s worth of tests.
The state defines the metro-east, or Region 4, as St. Clair, Madison, Clinton, Randolph, Monroe, Bond and Washington counties.
Restrictions, including a ban on indoor service at bars and restaurants, went into place on Sept. 2 after the region surpassed the 8% positivity rate threshold that triggers additional rules. Local leaders say the restrictions are the reason for the decreasing percentage of positive cases.
“There isn’t one person who has enjoyed the mitigations, but it has shown that it’s working,” said St. Clair County Emergency Management Director Herb Simmons.
Illinois provides the rate for each region at dph.illinois.gov/regionmetrics. Information on the website is delayed by three days, so Wednesday, Sept. 16, was the latest data available Saturday.
Meanwhile, the state’s seven-day positivity rate from Sept. 12-18 is 3.5%, down from the 3.6% positivity rate reported on Friday.
Madison County reported 51 new cases and St. Clair County reported 53 new cases and one new death. Monroe County reported 14 new positives.
The person who died in St. Clair County was a woman in her 90s with unknown health conditions.
Regionally, 31% of the metro-east’s hospital beds and 44% of the region’s ICU beds were available as of Saturday, according to data from the Illinois Department of Public Health.

St. Clair County has now had a total of 6,967 COVID-19 diagnoses and 184 deaths since the coronavirus pandemic began.

Southwestern Illinois COVID-19 statistics
ZIP code-level numbers below are provided by the state each afternoon at dph.illinois.gov/covid19/covid19-statistics. Madison and Macoupin counties compile their own statistics by ZIP code later in the day, so the numbers may differ from what appears on the Illinois Department of Public Health’s website. The Belleville News-Democrat reports the information county health departments provide.
ZIP codes with fewer than five cases of the virus are not reported by health officials. The number in parentheses after each ZIP code below reflects the change from the previous day’s cumulative total. A decrease reflects a correction.
All other information comes from local health departments. The “recoveries” figure refers to the number of people who completed the required isolation period in most counties.
