Suspect arrested in off-duty officer shooting at Ferguson Walmart, police say

Police have made an arrest in the shooting of an off-duty officer at a Walmart in Ferguson, Missouri on Sunday.

The suspect’s name is not being released until he is charged, St. Louis County Prosecutor’s Office spokesman Tim Swope told KSDK 5 Tuesday. Swope said that the office plans to charge the man and will be asking a judge not to issue bond.

The shooting happened at 7:11 a.m. Sunday when the uniformed officer, who was working at his second job as a Walmart security officer, confronted the man on the suspicion that he was shoplifting from the store at 1071 West Florissant Ave. in Ferguson.

The officer was shot in the arm. Two additional shots to the torso were stopped by his body armor, St. Louis County Police Sgt. Benjamin Granda said in a media release. The 35-year-old officer was taken to a local hospital for treatment of his non-life-threatening injuries. He has about two and a half years experience in law enforcement.

A manhunt for the armed and dangerous suspect continued into Monday and Tuesday.

According to KSDK, the arrest came Tuesday after a foot pursuit in north St. Louis County.
