Homeowner digs up live World War II artillery while doing yard work, Chicago cops say

A homeowner doing yard work uncovered an unexpected artifact this week, Chicago police say.

The man was digging in his yard when he found a World War II artillery shell. The bomb squad arrived and did an X-ray of the metal object, determining it could explode, police say.

“Members of the public are reminded if they find any kind of suspicious object or item they believe to be explosive to immediately clear the area and contact police,” police said. “Better safe than sorry.”

The bomb squad took the artillery shell to another location and destroyed it using a “counter charge.” No one was injured.
