With average gas prices in Illinois now well above $4 per gallon, drivers can expect to pay even more after President Joe Biden announced a ban on Russian oil imports Tuesday.
AAA reported the average price per gallon of regular fuel at $4.42 in Illinois Tuesday, higher than the national average of $4.17 per gallon. Drivers could soon see gas prices rise to $5 per gallon across the state after growing support to restrict Russian energy imports. Biden took that step Tuesday, hoping to turn up the heat on the Kremlin for launching an invasion of Ukraine and unleashing a new refugee crisis in Europe.

Prices hovered at $4.59 per gallon Tuesday, with the cheapest spot to fuel up being the Circle K on South Belt Way, where gas was selling for $4.13 per gallon.
Gas prices in nearby Madison, Clinton and Washington counties were also on the lower end, with gas selling Tuesday in those counties at about $4.20.
