Gas prices reach record highs in Illinois, St. Louis. See what you’ll pay by county
While inflation has catapulted prices for groceries, apparel and used cars, fuel has been the biggest victim.
Gas prices have seen a 48% increase nationally over the past year, and Illinoisans are being hit even harder than some other parts of the country. Average prices reached a new all-time high in Illinois and St. Louis Tuesday.
Drivers in Illinois currently pay more than the national average for fuel, with average prices reaching $4.693 in the Land of Lincoln and $4.374 across the country, according to data from AAA.
Missouri motorists are shelling out less than the U.S. average, at $3.933, while St. Louis gas costs $4.02.
Diesel prices are at their highest recorded mark ever in Illinois and St. Louis. In St. Louis, diesel is running up at $5.177 on average, and Illinois edges the city out at $5.266.
Fuel currently costs less in St. Clair County than Illinois’ average, but more than the national figure, with AAA citing typical prices at $4.526.
The cheapest gas near Belleville, according to crowd-sourced tracker GasBuddy, was at the Circle K at 755 South Belt W, as of Tuesday at noon. It was going for $4.43.
