In the post-vaccine era of the coronavirus pandemic, most Americans say they plan to travel sometime in 2022, a recent NerdWallet survey of 2,000 U.S. adults found.

Newly released Airbnb booking data indicate some of them may be traveling to more rural areas more often. In 2021, domestic nights booked by U.S. guests on Airbnb for stays in rural areas grew 110% compared to 2019, while Airbnb hosts there made more than $3.5 billion last year.

In Illinois, hosts in rural counties earned more than $18 million in 2021, according to data shared by an Airbnb representative. The data indicate the typical Airbnb host in rural parts of the state made more than $11,000 last year.

More homeowners also seem to be getting in on the short-term rental scene as well, with 87 cities and towns in Illinois welcoming their first-ever Airbnb guests since the pandemic began.

In St. Clair County, Airbnb hosts earned a cumulative roughly $1 million in 2021, according to the Airbnb representative.
