Two persons were found dead along a Franklin County highway after they apparently were struck by a vehicle while they were walking, the sheriff’s office said.

The bodies were found Wednesday morning in a ditch along Illinois 14 near South Jenette Street in Buckner after a passing motorist called 911, according to a news release from Franklin County Sheriff Kyle Bacon.

The names of the two victims have not been released.

Investigators have located the vehicle and driver, Bacon said.

“Preliminary information indicates that both subjects were struck while walking along State Highway 14,” the news release said. “The investigation is ongoing and no other information will be released at this time.”

A spokesman for Illinois State Police said the agency is assisting the sheriff’s office, which is overseeing the investigation. Also, Franklin County Coroner Marty Leffler declined to release information about the deaths and said the sheriff’s office is handling the release of information in connection with the double fatality.
