A 19-year-old woman is accused of discarding the remains of her dead baby in a trash can, Illinois police say.

The Evanston Police Department said the woman gave birth Aug. 25, and the baby died “shortly after birth.”

Officers began investigating Aug. 29 when they received reports the woman had disposed of the remains in the trash, according to a Nov. 22 news release. Investigators did not specify when the remains were discarded.

Police said officers searched for the remains, but they were unable to be found. It’s believed the mother concealed the death of her newborn, according to investigators.

“Without the infant’s remains, the medical examiner’s office is not able to determine the cause and manner of death,” according to police.

The mother was indicted on a felony count of concealment of death and was arrested Nov. 19, police said.

A 43-year-old woman who lives in the same home as the 19-year-old was also charged with concealing a death, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Evanston is about a 15-mile drive north from Chicago.
