Post offices closed in Illinois and nationwide Thursday. Here’s why
U.S. Postal Service offices in Illinois and nationwide will largely be closed Thursday, Jan. 9 as part of a federal day of observance for former President Jimmy Carter.
USPS will not deliver mail and will close retail locations Thursday, which is designated as a national day of mourning for the former president. Limited package delivery services will still be available, according to a release from the USPS website.
“Local managers will advise employees on staffing levels to maintain limited package delivery operations and prepare for the resumption of regular activities Friday, Jan. 10,” according to the USPS.
Carter died Dec. 29 at 100. He was the longest-living U.S. president.
All federal facilities, including U.S. post offices, are required to fly American flags at half-staff until Wednesday, Jan. 29.
