Juneteenth 2025: Are Illinois state agencies, post offices closed for the holiday?
The U.S. Postal Service will close Thursday for Juneteenth National Independence Day, and mail deliveries will not be made. Normal service will resume Friday.
The Juneteenth holiday commemorates the emancipation of enslaved Black people in Galveston, Texas, in 1865. The holiday has only been recognized by the U.S. federal government since 2021, but people in southwest Illinois have been celebrating it with an organized community event for more than a decade.
UPS stores will be open Thursday, and the company’s delivery and pickup services will be available. FedEx will also operate normally.
Non-essential federal offices will close for the holiday, as will Illinois Secretary of State facilities, such as the driver’s license offices. The secretary of state’s office reports some state holidays are observed on different days depending on the facility, and recommends residents check their location’s hours.
Juneteenth is also recognized as a banking holiday, so in-person banking services will generally be unavailable.
Many grocery chains, including Walmart and Aldi, will have regular operating hours on the holiday.
