Bread sold in IL recalled for undeclared potential allergen. How to check your loaf
Hartford Bakery Inc. has voluntarily recalled six lots of one of its bread products sold in Illinois, Missouri and 10 other states because it may contain undeclared hazelnuts.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration published the recall information Thursday, July 10. It applies to certain lots of the “Lewis Bake Shop Artisan Style 1/2 Loaf” sold in some Walmart and Kroger stores.
The bread comes in a plastic bag marked with the following information, according to the recall:
Lot code T10 174010206, T10 174010306, T10 174010406, T10 174020206, T10 174020306, T10 174020406 on the front panel of packaging
Net Weight 12 ounces (340 grams), UPC 24126018152 on the bottom of packaging
An expiration date of July 13, 2025, on the front panel of packaging
The baking company initiated the recall after discovering “approximately 883 loaves of bread from six production lots contained visible hazelnuts.” The packaging says the bread “May Contain Tree Nuts,” but doesn’t say “Contains Hazelnuts,” the recall said.
The company announced it would remove all units of product in the six affected lot codes “out of an abundance of caution.”
An investigation found an error in a change of packaging for a bread with hazelnuts to the advertised white bread product.
“While there have been no major reports of injury or illness to date, Hartford Bakery is aware of one customer who experienced digestive discomfort after consumption,” the recall said. “Hartford Bakery also received consumer complaints from those who saw the nuts before consuming the product.”
The recall encouraged anyone who bought the bread to return it to where it was purchased for a full refund. Those with questions about the product can contact Hartford Bakery at 1-812-425-4642 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, except for holidays.
