The owner of an ice cream shop was arrested on charges including child pornography after a hidden camera was discovered in the store bathroom, Illinois officials say.

The Addison Police Department began looking into the matter after receiving an “anonymous complaint … regarding what appeared to be a fake wall electrical outlet” in the restroom at Flavor Frenzy, an ice cream store in north Addison, the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office said in an Aug. 17 news release.

An undercover officer visited the shop, went into the bathroom and saw the suspicious outlet, which looked to have a small camera lens “positioned to capture portions of the restroom,” officials said. Officers returned later with a search warrant and discovered that the “phony outlet” contained a recording device.

Flavor Frenzy’s owner, 58-year-old Steven M. Weisberg, was arrested Aug. 15 on charges of child pornography, child pornography soliciting a child for performance, unauthorized video recording in a public place and unauthorized recording of a person under 18, court records show.

No attorney information was available for Weisberg as of the afternoon of Aug. 17. McClatchy News reached out to Flavor Frenzy for comment, but didn’t immediately receive a response.

Investigation of devices belonging to Weisberg revealed 11 recordings in a deleted folder on his phone, which had been recorded by the camera in the store bathroom, according to officials. It’s not clear exactly how long the camera was hidden in the restroom, but investigators believe Weisberg installed it “a few years earlier.”

There were six people captured in the recording, and “at least three … were female employees at Flavor Frenzy,” officials said.

In one instance, investigators say Weisberg told a 16-year-old worker to try on different Flavor Frenzy branded shirts, which required her to take off her shirt in the bathroom.

But not everyone seen in the recordings have been identified, according to officials, as there are “two additional videos on (Weisberg’s) phone of yet to be identified female employees, one of whom is a minor, at various stages of undress exposing their buttocks and sex organs.”

After Weisberg was arrested, officials say four more minor employees went to the Addison Police Department and told investigators he had also asked them to “model” t-shirts for him.

“Mr. Weisberg allegedly falsely created an environment where children should have felt safe and secure,” Police Chief Roy Selvik said in a release. “Instead, he betrayed not only their trust, but the trust of our entire community in one of the most heinous and disturbing ways.”

An investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact Addison police at 630-543-3080.

Addison is a roughly 20-mile drive west from Chicago.
