A 55-year-old man died after he was hit by a car while trying to catch a dog, Missouri State Highway Patrol said in a report.

David Courtway was running after a dog on the westbound side of Interstate 70 around 9:30 p.m. on Jan. 6 when he ran into the road, the report said.

A 22-year-old driver noticed the man in the road “at the last second,” and hit the brakes, according to the report.

But it was too late, and the woman’s vehicle hit Courtway, who was from Union, the report said.

He was pronounced dead on the scene, the Highway Patrol reported. The driver of the vehicle was transported to a hospital with minor injuries.

The fatal accident caused a section of I-70 to be shut down, Warren County Sheriff’s Department said in a Facebook post.
