Will it be a white Christmas in southwestern Illinois? Here’s the latest prediction.
The metro-east will likely see snow ahead of the holidays, according to the latest forecast.
The National Weather Service St. Louis office is confident there is a 75% chance of measurable snowfall across the area for late Wednesday into Thursday, according to meteorologist Alex Elmore.
What they don’t yet know is how much snow will fall or if it will stick around long enough for a white Christmas.
Elmore said some areas could just see a dusting. The St. Louis office isn’t sure if that snow will last until Christmas on Sunday or if more snow will fall after Thursday.
“We’re not particularly confident about how much snow is going to fall, but we are very confident that it is going to be dangerously cold,” Elmore said in an interview on Saturday afternoon.
A cold front is expected to move through the area, bringing temperatures down to the teens with wind chills around zero degrees. “That is dangerous for folks that have to be outside,” Elmore added.
He said the National Weather Service meteorologists should know more by Monday or Tuesday about snowfall amounts that particular locations in the region are expected to experience and about the forecast for later in the week.
