A bit more snow is in the forecast for the metro-east along with continued bitter cold wind chills and warnings to avoid outdoor activities.

The National Weather Service issued a wind chill advisory for very cold wind chills as low as 25 degrees below zero from noon Friday to noon Saturday.

Overnight Thursday, the wind chill in the St. Louis region reached 33 degrees below zero, according to meteorologist Alex Elmore of the National Weather Service. He said it broke into the top 10 coldest wind chills the region has experienced, tied for ninth place.

The last time the region saw wind chills this cold was Jan. 5-7, 2014, when it was also 33 degrees below zero.

The region’s coldest wind chill for December was 41 degrees below zero Dec. 21-26, 1983.

“The dangerously cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes,” the National Weather Service stated Friday morning. “Avoid outside activities if possible. When outside, make sure you wear appropriate clothing, a hat, and gloves.”

The National Weather Service St. Louis office is also monitoring the chance for some light snow late Sunday night into Monday morning, according to Elmore. He said about a half of an inch is generally what’s expected.
