Some weather observers in southwestern Illinois were able to accurately gauge how much snow fell from Thursday’s winter storm, despite the windy conditions that made it difficult to measure snowfall.

Their reports show the metro-east generally saw what had been forecast: 1-2 inches of snow, according to Alex Elmore, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s St. Louis office.

Here’s what the weather observers measured in seven locations and shared with the National Weather Service:

  • Scott Air Force Base: A little over 3 inches.
  • Swansea: 2 inches.
  • Alton: 2 inches.
  • Troy: 1.8 inches.
  • St. Louis: 1.8 inches.
  • Belleville: 1.5 inches.
  • Edwardsville: 1.4 inches.

Elmore said the agency received fewer snowfall reports than it typically does, but meteorologists believe the results are accurate because they come from trained individuals and generally align with Thursday’s forecast.

The measurement for St. Louis came from St. Louis Lambert International Airport, the National Weather Service’s official climate site.
