Is Illinois in for a ‘soggy’ summer? It’s possible, according to one seasonal prediction
Residents of southwest Illinois and St. Louis may experience more rain than usual in the coming months, according to the National Weather Service.
The greater St. Louis area has a 40% to 50% chance of seeing above-normal precipitation from June to August, the NWS reports. In addition to potentially rainy weather, a Farmers’ Almanac prediction warns the region may also have more storms than usual.
Here’s what to know about summer weather, including a prediction from the Farmers’ Almanac and data from meteorologists with the NWS.
Farmers’ Almanac summer predictions
The Farmers’ Almanac warns of “sizzling temperatures” across the U.S. this summer, plus storms and high humidity in some areas.
The almanac’s Summer Forecast 2023 predicts Illinois and surrounding states will have a “warm-to-hot, soggy” summer, while Missouri’s season will be “broiling wet.”
June will be stormy, particularly in locations east of the Mississippi River, the almanac predicts. Those in the U.S. can expect “quite hot” weather in July and high humidity in August, it continues.
The almanac makes predictions based on a mysterious formula that considers factors such as planetary positioning, sunspot activity and tidal action of the moon.
“The only person who knows the exact formula is the Farmers’ Almanac weather prognosticator who goes by the pseudonym of Caleb Weatherbee,” the organization’s website says. “To protect this proprietary formula, the editors of the Farmers’ Almanac prefer to keep both Caleb’s true identity and the formula a closely guarded brand secret.”
The Farmers’ Almanac has provided extended forecasts since 1818, according to its website.
