If you have been looking for some real cold weather, your wish is expected to come true next week.

The high temperature for Halloween on Tuesday is only going to be 46, according to the National Weather Service forecast.

And the low temperatures on Wednesday and probably Tuesday are expected to be in the upper 20s, according to meteorologist Jon Carney of National Weather Service’s St. Louis office.

There is a 80% to 100% chance of a “widespread freeze” Monday night to Tuesday morning and again Tuesday night to Wednesday morning, the weather service said on Facebook on Wednesday.

“The coldest weather we have seen since last March will dominate the region Monday through Wednesday,” the service said. “Temperatures will be 10 to 20 degrees below normal and more typical of early December.”

Carney said “a real strong high pressure system that comes out of Canada” will cause much cooler weather beginning Friday night. He described this blast of air as “unseasonably strong.”

If you have potted plants that you want to save, Carney recommends you bring them inside instead of merely covering them.

“The covering is pretty good for frost but we’re going to have temperatures right now it looks like in the upper 20s at least Wednesday morning, if not Tuesday morning as well,” he said.

“It will end anything that’s still growing.”
