Here’s the latest look at a triple threat of storms headed toward the metro-east

The work week kicks off with a triple threat of storms including the possibility of tornadoes.

The first blast arrived early Tuesday morning, with a second round due Tuesday afternoon and the final, and potentially the most severe and widespread threat, is possible on Wednesday afternoon and early evening, according to the National Weather Service.

These storms are continuing a trend of stormy weather this spring, highlighted by the nine tornadoes in the region on April 18.

Here’s a rundown of the latest waves of storms in the forecast:

Early Tuesday

Tuesday morning’s thunderstorms developed in the Plains before moving east toward the St. Louis metro area.

Expect some rain through about 8 a.m., which is when a tornado watch expires in the metro-east, according to the National Weather Service in St. Louis.

Tuesday afternoon

The threat on Tuesday afternoon depends upon the strength of the storms on early Tuesday morning, said Matt Beitscher, the lead meteorologist for the National Weather Service in St. Louis.

“If the line is very cohesive and it kind of wipes away all that instability and that energy for the thunderstorms in a definitive way on Tuesday morning, then the potential for redevelopment on Tuesday afternoon is pretty low,” he said.

But if the line isn’t cohesive, we could see thunderstorms on Tuesday afternoon.

Wednesday

Beitscher said “very large hail, very strong winds and potentially an isolated strong tornado” are all “within the realm of possibility” for Wednesday afternoon and evening when thunderstorms are expected.
