Metro-east residents may see first snow of the season. How much and when?
The National Weather Service is predicting that St. Louis and the metro-east will get its first snow of the season this weekend.
According to an online briefing from the agency’s St. Louis forecast office, a weather system is expected to quickly slide across the region from northwest to southeast during the day Saturday with a 60 to 80% chance of light snow between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.
Exact amounts of snowfall in specific locations remain uncertain, but they could range from 1/10 to more than an inch.
“Near/below freezing temperatures could result in slick and hazardous roadways, particularly bridges and overpasses,” the briefing states.
Christmas shoppers on Black Friday and the rest of the Thanksgiving holiday weekend also will want to bundle up.
A prolonged period of cold weather is expected with near- or below-freezing temperatures from Friday night through Tuesday night and nighttime lows near or below 20 degrees.
“The coldest temperatures will be Sunday and Monday mornings, when locations in northeast Missouri and west-central Illinois drop to near 10 degrees,” the briefing states.
“Wind chills, while not considered extreme, are forecast to drop into the single digits for the first time this season.”
