How much snow did the metro-east get (so far) and what’s next?
While snowfall may be slowing in the metro-east, the National Weather Service St. Louis cautions hazards may still be present.
Based on reports the National Weather Service St. Louis has received, Belleville and surrounding areas likely saw at least 5 inches of snow this morning into early afternoon, lead meteorologist Matt Beitscher said.
That snow is now switching to rain, which is expected to continue until between 7 and 9 p.m. in St. Clair County, Beitscher said. Wind gusts could reach 30 mph or higher into Sunday, he added.
Road conditions largely depend on that rain. Spots that haven’t been plowed and above-ground areas like bridges and overpasses may see slush freeze over, Beitscher said.
But, areas where most of the snow and liquid has been removed may be in the clear, as “marginally warm” ground temperatures coupled with strong wind gusts can help clear accumulation from roads.
“People need to drive for the conditions and use their best judgment,” Beitscher said.
Precipitation is expected to return Monday afternoon into Monday night. New snow could amount to an additional 1-2 inches, Beitscher said.
“People shouldn’t discount Monday as being in the clear,” he said.
He said he expects snow on grass and other untreated surfaces to last a few days.
Metro-east residents also need to prepare for the unseasonable cold – temperatures are expected to drop below freezing tonight and stay that way for multiple days, the National Weather Service St. Louis projects.
