Forecast has the metro-east at epicenter of severe weather threat. See timeline

There’s potential for severe thunderstorms in Belleville and surrounding areas Monday, according to the National Weather Service, and hazards could include hail, wind and tornadoes.

Some outlooks, including one from the NWS’ Storm Prediction Center, put the metro-east and St. Louis at the epicenter of severe weather risk for Monday, although the probability is reported at 30%.

One popular forecast page on Facebook, Southern Illinois Weather Information, has reported multiple models show risks of severe weather.

“There’s plenty of time for things to change. But as of right now, it looks like probably the best setup for severe weather in our area so far this spring,” Jayson Gosselin, a meteorologist with the NWS St. Louis office, told the News-Democrat Friday.

Gosselin recommends residents stay up-to-date on the latest forecast and said Monday afternoon and evening may not be the best time to make outdoor plans.

“But again, this far out, things can change and nothing is set in stone,” Gosselin said.

While tornadoes, hail and wind are possible Monday, flooding from heavy rain is not likely to be an issue, Gosselin added.

Gosselin said the likelihood of at least some severe weather locally Monday was “fairly high.”

Weather forecast for Belleville

Before the severe weather threat Monday, metro-east residents should be able to enjoy a sunny Saturday. Here is Belleville’s forecast, from the NWS St. Louis office:

  • Friday: 30% chance of precipitation, with a 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms before 8 p.m. Any thunderstorms in Belleville Friday are not expected to be severe, Gosselin said. Temperatures from 53 to 76 degrees.
  • Saturday: Sunny skies during the day and partly cloudy skies at night, with temperatures from 51 to 77 degrees.
  • Sunday: Temperatures from about 61 to 75 degrees, with a 40% chance of precipitation.
  • Monday: Temperatures from 55 to 80 degrees, with showers and thunderstorms likely. Storms may become severe.
  • Tuesday: Temperatures from 52 to 73 degrees, with a 20 to 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms.

Belleville’s forecast calls for a chance of showers continuing through Thursday, but Gosselin said the weather pattern is expected to be cooler and quieter, from a severe weather standpoint, after Monday.
