Think taxes are unfair? Now there’s proof.

WalletHub

WalletHub just did a study putting numbers to what every Illinois taxpayer already knew: This state’s tax system is viciously unfair in both perception and reality.

Just how unfair? We are 46th worst in the nation, based on opinion polls as well as taxation data.

Who is mistreated by our tax system? Nearly everyone.

The poor are overtaxed: Illinois ranked third-worst for overtaxing the bottom 20 percent of incomes.

The middle class is overtaxed: We ranked 10th-worst for overtaxing folks in the 20th through 40th percentiles of income.

We are way too dependent on property taxes, ranking 44th worst, and state income taxes, 30th.

So are you ready for the next hit as state lawmakers refuse any reforms while crying that only higher taxes — another $6 billion — will allow them to pass a 2016 budget?
