Grizzlies squander early lead in loss to Schaumburg

The Gateway Grizzlies let another one slip away Sunday in suburban Chicago.

Schaumburg erased an early 3-0 deficit to score eight unanswered runs as it defeated Gateway 8-4 on Sunday in a Frontier League game

The Grizzlies (18-43) had their first four batters in the top of the first inning reach base. The inning was highlighted on a two-run double by Blake Brown and a sacrifice fly by Ramon Osuna.

But the Boomers (40-19) bounced right back. Schaumburg scored twice in the second inning and a run in both the third and sixth innings to take the lead. The Boomers then put the game away with four runs in the seventh inning.

Ja’Vaun West (2-6) took the loss for the Grizzlies, allowing four runs over 5 2/3 innings. He gave up two hits, struck out three and walked seven.

Next up, Gateway returns home to GCS Credit Union Ballpark in Sauget. Following an off day Monday, the Grizzlies begin a six-game homestand with a three-game series against the Joliet Slammers. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. Tuesday. All of the action can be heard on the Grizzlies Media Network.
