Grizzlies lose series to CornBelters
The Gateway Grizzlies (23-50) were shut out Sunday evening in a 4-0 loss to the Normal CornBelters (34-37).
Normal scored once in the second inning, which was all the CornBelters needed. They added an insurance run in the fourth and another pair in the seventh.
The Grizzlies collected only four hits in the ballgame, the first came in the fifth inning, against Normal starter Charlie Gillies, who threw the second complete-game shutout of his career. Gateway also picked up a pair of walks off of him, but they made two outs on the basepaths and stranded four runners.
Vince Molesky (5-6) took the loss for the Grizzlies. On short rest, Molesky battled through seven innings and allowed four runs while striking out four. Mike Elwood threw a scoreless inning out of the bullpen.
Gateway is off Monday before taking on the River City Rascals in O’Fallon, Missouri, on Tuesday night. First pitch will fly at 6:35 p.m. The Grizzlies next home game is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday night in Sauget, the first of two straight at home to finish out a split series with the Rascals. All of the action is available on the Grizzlies Media Network.
