McKendree University senior quarterback Reece Metcalf(Mount Carmel, IL/Mount Carmel) has been selected as the Great Lakes Valley Conference Football Offensive Player of the Week. The conference office announced its list of weekly recipients on Monday.
Metcalf had a big day — particularly in the first half — in leading the Bearcats to a 34-17 victory on Saturday at Kentucky State University. Metcalf threw a career-high four touchdown passes, all of which came in the first 30 minutes of play, to help stake McKendree to a 17-point lead at the intermission. For the day, he was 18-of-22 through the air for a season-best 260 yards, completing his first 11 pass attempts against the Thorobreds. Among Metcalf’s 18 completions was a 75-yard touchdown strike to freshman wide receiver Steven Towns, Jr. (Normal, IL/Normal Community), with 27 seconds left before halftime.
In McKendree’s two games this season, Metcalf has completed nearly 75 percent of his pass attempts, going 35-of-47 for 518 yards with seven touchdowns. He leads the GLVC in passing offense, averaging 259 yards per contest. Metcalf also owns a league-best passer rating of 216.2.
This is the second time in his career that Metcalf has garnered GLVC Offensive Player of the Week accolades. He also won the award following his first collegiate start as a sophomore back in 2016 by throwing for 338 yards in a win over Lincoln University.
The McKendree football squad will put its 2-0 record on the line Saturday in non-conference play when it hosts Bowie State University. The Bearcats and Bulldogs will square off at 1 p.m. at Leemon Field.
