St. Louis BattleHawks QB signs with Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs

Jordan Ta’amu is headed back for another shot in the National Football League.

Ta’amu, who led the XFL’s St. Louis BattleHawks to a 3-2 record before the season was suspended by the coronavirus pandemic, signed a free agent contract Monday with the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs.

Ta’amu’s agent, Kenny Zimmerman, announced the deal. Financial terms were not disclosed. Ta’amu was signed as an undrafted free agent last year by the NFL’s Houston Texans but was released in late August.

Ta’amu is expected to compete with NFL veterans Chad Henne and Kyle Schurmer for a backup role behind Super Bowl hero Patrick Mahomes

Ta’amu, placed with the BattleHawks as their first player in franchise history, was one of the XFL’s top performers in the shortened season. The former University of Mississippi quarterback led the league in completion percentage (72.1%), connecting on 97 of 134 attempts for 1,050 yards. He had five touchdown passes and 2 interceptions.

A native of Pearl City, Hawaii, Ta’amu, 22, also ran for 241 yards and a touchdown. Ta’amu was the XFL’s Star of the week for his performance in a week four win over the Seattle Dragons. In that win, he completed 20-of-27 for 284 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 64 yards.

Ta’amu played two years at Mississippi. As a junior in 2017, he played in eight games, including five starts with 1,682 passing yards with 11 touchdowns.

In his senior season, Ta’amu broke the Ole Miss single-season record with four 400-yard passing games and led the SEC in both passing yards per game and total offense. He finished 6th all-time in school history with 5,600 career passing yards and 9th in passing touchdowns.
