Former O’Fallon, St. Louis BattleHawks standout signs with Pittsburgh Steelers
Dewayne Hendrix is going back to the Steel City.
Hendrix, a 2014 O’Fallon High School graduate who played his final three years of college football at the University of Pittsburgh, has signed a free agent contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
A 6-4 270-pound defensive end, Hendrix spent the last three months as a member of the XFL’s St. Louis BattleHawks where he made four tackles, one tackle for loss, one sack and one quarterback hurry. The season ended with five games remaining because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Hendrix, 24, has some pro football experience. He was signed by Miami in July of 2019 as an undrafted free agent defensive end out of Pitt and spent this last season on the practice teams of the Dolphins, Jacksonville Jaguars and the Chicago Bears.
Hendrix then signed with the BattleHawks on Jan. 9.
Hendrix was a two-year starter at O’Fallon and was rated as the No. 5 defensive end in the nation as a senior by Rivals.com.
After graduating, Hendrix chose the University of Tennessee, where he spent one season before transferring to the Atlantic Coast Conference and the University of Pittsburgh.
In 30 games with at Pitt, Hendrix was credited with 50 tackles, 30 solos and 7 1/2 sacks.
