Reigning Indy 500 winner, 7 other former champs ready for challenge at WWT Raceway

After winning the Indianapolis 500 for the second time in four years, Japan’s Takuma Sato will be out for a second straight title at World Wide Technology Raceway in Madison on Saturday, Aug. 29, and Sunday, Aug. 30.

Sato, winner of the Indy 500 on Sunday, will be one of eight Indianapolis 500 winners in the field at World Wide Technology Raceway’s Bommarito Automotive Group 500 Mega weekend.

Also in the field are past Indy 500 winners Helio Castroneves (2001, 2002, 2009), Takuma Sato (2017, 2020), Scott Dixon (2008), Tony Kanaan (2013), Ryan Hunter-Reay (2014), Alexander Rossi (2016), Will Power (2018) and Simon Pagenaud (2019).

They will compete in the twin, 200-lap NTT INDYCAR SERIES races on Saturday and Sunday at WWTR. The fourth annual Bommarito Automotive Group 500 Mega Weekend also includes the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series iHeart 200, the Dutch Boy 150 for the ARCA Menards Series and the Vintage Indy Registry/Open Wheel Icons exhibition. Both WWTR INDYCAR races will be titled the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 presented by Axalta and Valvoline.

Sato has quite a history with WWTR. In the 2019 edition of the Bommarito 500, Sato held off hard-charging Ed Carpenter to the closest finish in WWTR history.
