Max Skaer wins singles title at Belleville East Lancers Junior Tennis Tournament
BELLEVILLE Max Skaer of Belleville and the doubles team of Isabell Burwitz of Belleville and Kylie McCarthy of Troy were among the local winners at the Belleville East Lancers Junior Tennis Tournament which was completed on Sunday at Belleville East High School.
Skaer, one of the top junior players in the St. Louis area, won the boys 16 and under age group title, while Burwitz, a standout at Belleville East and McCarthy, one of the top doubles players in state last season while playing at Triad High School, captured the girls 16 and under doubles crown.
Skaer, Burwitz and McCarthy were three metro-east area players who excelled in the four day event which annually attracts many of the region’s top players. Tournament director and Belleville East boys tennis coach Dan Skaer said that 130 players competed this weekend.
“I’m pleased. It was a good tournament,’’ Skaer said. “It wasn’t our biggest tournament. We’ve had close to 200 in years before but I think all of the summer tournaments are down in players because there are just so many of them now.’’
Max Skaer was the only boy from the metro east to win a singles title. Rouhit Chouhan (18 and under), Brian Kim (14 and under) and Gus Tettample (12 and under) all of St. Louis were the other singles champions.
St. Louis players also dominated in the girls singles draw as Claire Martin (18’s), Alyson Piskulic (16’s) and Lily Walther (12’s) all from St. Louis won their respective flights. The only metro-east girl winning a chamnpionship was Peyton Riedel of Edwardsville who won the girls 14 and under chamnpionship.
In doubles, Eric Weiler and Alex Gray of Edwardsville won the 18 and under title, while Dominic Macaluso of O’Fallon and Calvin Faris of St. Louis won the 16 year old class.
Jack Rosenstengel of Mascoutah and Rory Sutter of St. Louis won the boys 12 and under class.
Callaghan Adams of Edwardsville, the Belleville News-Democrat Player of the Year last Fall, teammed with Mary Sullivan of St. Louis to win the girls 18 and under doubles title, while two Belleville players Maddie Buschur and Lauren Cowulich won the girls 14 and under title.
Laura Finnie of St. Louis combined with Walther to win the girls 12 and under championship.
