SATURDAY BASEBALL: CM rallies past Staunton; Jersey pitches two no-hitters
The Staunton Bulldogs shut out the Civic Memorial Eagles while building a four-run inning through five innings on Saturday.
CM wiped out that work by the Dogs with a four-run sixth to draw even and a four-run ninth inning to beat Staunton 8-4 in nine innings at Staunton. The Eagles won their third in a row to move to 9-5. Staunton is 7-7.
CM opens Mississippi Valley Conference play with games vs. Waterloo on Monday in Bethalto and Wednesday in Waterloo.
Chase Butler's RBI single in the ninth broke a 4-4 tie and Brock Rust's three-run double put the Bulldogs down four. Rust finished with two doubles and four RBI and joined Butler and Jacob Flowers with two hits each for CM.
Rust started and allowed two runs in 4 1/3 innings. Flowers was the winner, pitching 4 2/3 scoreless innings while allowing two hits and one walk with six strikeouts. He retired the last five Dogs he faced.
Carter Legendre, who took the loss in his three innings of relief, had two hits to lead Staunton.
Freeburg 14, Alton 4 - A seven-run second inning grew the Midgets' lead to 10-1 and the Redbirds lost a five-inning nonconference game at Alton High in Godfrey. Freeburg has won six in a row to rise to 10-2. Alton has lost five in a row to drop to 6-7.
Alex Pilger had two hits, including a double, and drove in three runs to lead the Redbirds' five-hit offense. Amari Raglin, one of four pitchers used by Alton, took the loss.
Father McGivney 2, Columbia 0 - The Griffins finished a 3-0 weekend at the Pleasant Plains Showcase by shutting out the Eagles. McGivney has won eight in a row to move its record to 12-3. Columbia is 2-7.
The Griffins scored the game's only runs in the third inning on Omar Avalos' RBI double and Isaac Wendler's RBI single. Wendler had two hits for McGivney, which outhit Columbia 8-4. Grant Reed allowed four hits in six innings with no walks and four strikeouts for the win, before Paddy Martin finished off the shutout with a save.
Calhoun splits at Southwestern - After getting shut out in the opener, the Piasa Birds' offense arrived to earn a doubleheader split at Schneider Park in Brighton. Calhoun won 7-0 before Southwestern won 10-7. Calhoun is 5-4. Southwestern is 4-8.
Calhoun's Abner Hillen needed just 67 pitches, including 49 strikes, to get through seven scoreless innings for his win in Game 1. Hillen allowed five hits and one walk with two strikeouts.
The Warriors' 17-hit attack brought three hits each from Easton Wallendorf, Jack Goode, Max Toppmeyer and Charlie Matthews and two hits each from Earl Elmore and Blake Nolte. Wallendorf and Elmore both had two RBI.
In Game 2, Carter Watson drove in three runs and Blake Rimbey and Reed Campbell both had two RBI for the Birds. Campbell and John Kunz both had two hits, with Carter Bacon pitching four innings for the win and Ben Biciocchi working two innings for a save.
Jack Goode had two doubles from four hits and Jacob Brannan homered with three hits and three RBI to lead Calhoun, which got three hits from Toppmeyer, two hits and two RBI from Jack Zipprich and two hits from Wallendorf. Shawn Grissom, the second of four Warriors pitchers, was hit with the loss.
Jersey sweeps Springfield Southeast - Shane Lamer and Brody Short both pitched no-hitters for the Panthers in a doubleheader sweep of the Spartans in Springfield.
The Panthers pushed their winning streak to seven in a row by beating Southeast 21-0 in four innings and 10-0 in five innings. Jersey, which opens MVC play at 11-0 Mascoutah on Monday, is 10-2. Southeast is 1-9.
After a scoreless first inning, Jersey broke out with 11 runs in the second inning and buried the Spartans by 21 in the first game. Shane Lamer pitched a no-hitter, getting through four innings on 42 pitches with one walk and one strikeout for the Panthers.
Jude Jones homered and Brogan Kanallakan had two hits and three RBI to lead Jersey's offense, which got two RBI apiece from Jones, Lamer, Bryce Hutchens and Evan Cheek.
In the second game, Short's five-inning no hitter came from 64 pitches with two walks and six strikeouts. Graham Vanausdoll and Brady Maxeiner both had two hits and two RBI, with Jones and Abe Kribs both adding two RBI for Jersey.
Carlinville, Greenfield split - The Cavaliers halted a five-game losing streak with a 6-4 victory in the first game before the Tigers won the second game 10-5 in a nonconference doubleheader in Palmyra. Carlinville is 3-6. Greenfield is 5-10.
The Cavies scored twice in the top of the seventh to break a 4-4 tie and win Game 1. Michael Kaganich had three hits and three RBI, Blake Killam had three hits and two RBI, Drew Quarton had three hits and Paxton Walch had two hits in the win for Carlinville. Kaganich, working in relief, was the winning pitcher with Quarton getting the final two outs for a save. Greenfield got a home run and double with two RBI from Kayden Roberts.
In Game 2, Greenfield built a 10-4 lead after three innings to salvage the split. Roberts rapped out two more doubles from three hits and two RBI, Logan Ross had two hits and three RBI, JD Roberts had two RBI and Brock Bowman and Hudson Duncheon each chipped in two hits for the Tigers. Rimbey White, the first of four Greenfield pitchers, started and got the win.
For Carlinville, Royce Loy and Zander Bellm both had two hits, with Colin McKinney taking the loss.
