TUESDAY BASEBALL: Two streaks die when Columbia takes down Roxana

The five-game losing streak is the longest for Columbia Eagles baseball since it closed with 2014 season with five successive defeats. The nine-game winning streak for Roxana Shells baseball is its longest since at least the 1990s.

Both streaks ended Tuesday at Eagleview Elementary School.

Columbia took command with seven runs in the second inning and defeated Roxana 11-5 in a Cahokia Conference matchup in Columbia. The Eagles, who had lost nine of their last 10 games, improve to 3-9 and 1-2 in the league. Roxana is 10-2 and 2-1 in Cahokia play.

The Shells get another shot at the Eagles on Thursday in Roxana and will be looking to clean up a defense that committed seven errors in Columbia.

The first of those seven boots came at the start of a second inning that then brought seven hits and seven runs for the Eagles. Roxana trailed 11-2 before getting three runs in the seventh inning.

Sean Maberry had two RBI and joined Max Autery and Lyndon Thies with two hits each for the Shells. Both of Autery's hits were doubles. Dalton Carriker started and got hit with the loss for Roxana, giving seven runs (three earned) on eight hits and one walk with no strikeouts.

Edwardsville 7, O'Fallon 1 - The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but could do no more against the Tigers, who took charge with five runs in the third inning and posted the Southwestern Conference victory at Blazier Field in O'Fallon.

Edwardsville, the six-time defending SWC champion, is 8-6 and 3-0 in the conference. O'Fallon is 11-5 and 0-1 in the SWC. The Tigers and Panthers play again at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Edwardsville.

Miller Dunnill gave a run on two hits, three walks and three strikeouts in five innings to earn the win for the Tigers, who got two scoreless innings of relief from Ty Hunt. Andrew McCutchen had two RBI and Hunt, Hunter Baugh and Tyson Wampler each had two hits for Edwardsville.

Alton 15, East St. Louis 3 - An eight-run third inning grew the Redbirds' lead to 14-3 and the Flyers fell in a five-inning SWC game in Godfrey. Alton is 8-7 and 1-2 in the SWC. East Side is 3-5 and 0-3 in the league.

Logan Hickman rapped out three doubles and drove in four runs for the Redbirds, who picked up two RBI from Alex Pilger. Alton's 15 runs came on six hits, 11 walks and five Flyer errors. The Redbirds used three pitchers, with starter Amari Raglin going two innings for the win.

Salem 18, East Alton-Wood River 1 - The Wildcats ran off from a 1-0 first-inning lead with 11 runs in the second and six in the third to put away the Oilers in a three-inning Cahokia Conference game at Norris Dorsey Stadium in Wood River. Salem is 3-13 and 1-2 in the league. EA-WR is 1-10 and 0-3 in the league.

Austin Woods' third-inning home run provided the lone run for the Oilers. Logan Quigley was the losing pitcher for EA-WR.

Gillespie 8, Pana 0 - Luke Schuckenbrock fired a two-hit shutout to keep the Miners unbeaten in the South Central Conference with a victory over the Panthers in Gillespie. The Miners are 9-3 and 3-0 in the SCC. Pana is 8-6 and 0-2 in the league.

Schuckenbrock struck out four and walked two while getting through seven innings on 91 pitches to get his record to 3-0 and his ERA to 0.35. Brody Shaw had three hits, including a homer and double, with two RBI for the Miners, who got two hits and two RBI from Brayden Enslow and two hits from Carson Hailstone.

North Mac 1, Southwestern 0 - One out from getting to an eighth-inning, the Piasa Birds lost when the Panthers scored the game's only run on a two-out balk in the seventh to win the SCC game in Virden. North Mac is 6-4 and 2-0 in the conference. Southwestern, which was shutout on four hits, falls to 4-10 and 1-1 in the SCC.

Carter Watson started for Southwestern and pitched 4 2/3 innings allowing one hit with four walks and four strikeouts. Ben Biciocchi took the loss in relief.

Staunton 12, Hillsboro 1 - The Bulldogs scored in five of the game's six innings to beat the Hiltoppers in a SCC matchup in Hillsboro. Staunton is 8-7 and 1-0 in the SCC. Hillsboro is 3-12 and 0-2 in the conference.

Matthew Overby had three hits, including two doubles, and three RBI, Cale Dugger had a double and triple from three hits and Carter Legendre had two hits and three RBI to lead the Dogs, who picked up two hits from Logan Tuetken. Lucas Coalson pitched five innings for the win, allowing one run on five hits with three walks and eight strikeouts.

Litchfield 5, Carlinville 3 - Titan Hires hit the first pitch he saw with one out in the seventh inning for a two-run homer to give the Purple Panthers a walk-off SCC win over the Cavaliers in Litchfield. The Panthers are 8-7 and 2-1 in the conference. Carlinville is 3-7 and 0-2 in the SCC.

The Cavies led 3-1 before Litchfield pulled even with two runs in the fourth inning. Drew Quarton started for Carlinville and pitched five innings, with Ian Ronald taking the loss in relief.

Carrollton 15, North Greene 0 - Landon Grafford and Ian Mauer each worked two innings to combine for a four-inning no-hitter in the Hawks' WIVC victory over the Spartans in Carrollton. The Hawks are 5-3. The Spartans are 0-8.

Grafford got the win, striking out four and walking one before Mauer finished with two strikeouts and one walk. Grafford had three hits, including a double and triple, with four RBI to lead Carrollton, which received two hits and three RBI from Buddy Holmes, two hits and two RBI from Charlie Stumpf and two hits each from Jayce Steinkuehler and Brady Clendenen.

Greenfield 13, Concord Triopia 6 - Six runs in the third inning grew the Tigers' lead to 12-5 and the Trojans fell in WIVC play at Palmyra. Greenfield is 6-11.

Layton Walters pitched four innings for the win, with Kayden Roberts earning a three-inning save. Roberts had three hits and Hudson Duncheon drove in four runs while joining Walters, Logan Ross, Rimbey White and Jace Murphy with two hits each for the Tigers.

Morrisonville 11, Bunker Hill 1 - The Mohawks finished off the Minutemen with a seven-run sixth to get the six-inning win at Morrisonville. The Mohawks are 7-4. Bunker Hill is 2-4-1.

Peter Jarden had two hits to lead the Minutemen. Starter Nick Rull went four innings and was tagged with the loss for Bunker Hill.
