Alton Golden Corral to close April 30 after years of struggles to stay open

Customers to Alton's Golden Corral, located at 350 Homer M. Adams Parkway, were greeted with some "difficult news" in recent days.

A sign posted on the door said the restaurant would be closing permanently on April 30. The reason being: "the location is no longer able to operate sustainably."

This closure is not the first in the business's history. Since opening in 2014, when the business took the place of Shogun Steakhouse, it closed in 2020 due to COVID and again in 2022.

After reopening in 2023, this will be the first time the business has announced a permanent closure.

A Golden Corral manager confirmed the closure and added that the employees will be transferred to other Golden Corral locations following April 30.

The posted notice was signed "Alton Gold Corral, Management and Staff" and stated that the business was unsuccessful in seeking alternative options to continue, prompting the owners to make "one of the hardest decisions."

Patrons are invited to dine with the business during its final two weeks or visit its sister locations in Shiloh, Illinois; O'Fallon, Missouri; and South County, Missouri.

Here is the full text of the Alton Golden Corral notice:

"It is with heavy hearts that we share the difficult news that this restaurant location will be closing permanently on Thursday, April 30, 2026. We hope this two-week notice will give you all the opportunity to come dine with us one last time. This decision was not made lightly. We explored every possible option to keep this location up and running, despite our best efforts, the location is no longer able to operate sustainably. Closing this location is one of the hardest decisions we have ever had to make. We sincerely regret the impact it will have on the community, and we appreciate your understanding during this transition. Please come and visit us at one of our sister locations, Shilo, IL, O'Fallon, MO, and South County.

"Thank you for visiting and supporting us all these years."

The business is open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday to Friday, and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday and Sunday.

The Telegraph contacted Golden Corral's headquarters on Monday but did not receive a response to a request for a statement.

Golden Corral server reflects on closing

Golden Corral server Tiffany Bock announced the news with a Facebook post on April 15, sharing that she started her first job at Golden Corral in 1999. Through time, she built a personal connection with the business and its employees.

"I have made so many friends, met so many amazing people, raised my children off of this job," Bock's post reads. "We were informed today that we will be closing the end of this month. They have tried to maintain, but it's almost impossible, unfortunately."

Bock looks forward to seeing her guests until close, but said the closing date depends on "whether the employees continue to show up."

"I thank you all for so many amazing years, literally couldn't have done it without all of you," the post continues.

Golden Corral, founded in 1973, is a restaurant chain that serves American fare, salads, and desserts in an all-you-can-eat buffet style.
