Belleville West routs Edwardsville, snaps Tigers' six-game streak
Belleville West broke open a tight game with an eight-run third inning and handed Edwardsville a short-game loss Tuesday at Tom Pile Field.
The Maroons went on to a 12-2 win in five innings, snapping the Tigers' six-game winning streak.
Edwardsville is now 9-7 overall and 4-1 in the Southwestern Conference, while Belleville West improved to 9-7-1 and 2-1.
The Maroons also became the first Southwestern Conference team to short game the Tigers at Tom Pile Field since O'Fallon's 11-0 win in six innings on May 10, 2016.
After both teams scored in the first, Belleville West took control in the third by sending 13 batters to the plate. The Maroons collected four hits and capitalized on two hit batters, two errors and a walk to turn a 1-1 game into a rout.
Edwardsville finished with five errors in the game, leading to 10 unearned runs.
With two runs already scored in the third, Adam Bilzing delivered the key blow with a three-run double to center field to extend the lead to 6-1. He went 3 for 3 with three RBI out of the No. 9 spot in the batting order.
Jack Harris followed later in the inning with an RBI double to make it 9-1. He finished 2 for 3 with two RBI.
Edwardsville tried to answer in the bottom half, getting an RBI single from Tyson Wampler to make it 9-2 and loading the bases with no outs. The rally stalled there, as a failed attempt to score on a wild pitch was followed by a strikeout and a flyout to end the threat.
The Maroons scored three runs in the fifth, including a two-run double by Max Feazel, to go up 12-2.
The Tigers couldn't answer in their half of the fifth, ending the game by the IHSA run rule.
Belleville West has now won three of the last four meetings in the series after previously dropping 10 straight.
Baugh and Wampler each had two hits for the Tigers. Wampler and Jak Kirgan each drove in a run.
EHS will look to start a new winning streak when it heads to Belleville West at 4:30 p.m. April 23 to wrap up the regular-season series.
