Edwardsville breaks tie with six-run sixth to beat Belleville West
Edwardsville used a mix of small ball and extra-base power to break open a tie game with a six-run sixth inning.
The Tigers strung together three bunt singles and two doubles in the frame to pull away for a 9-4 win over Belleville West on April 21 in Belleville.
It was the 12th straight win for Edwardsville, which improved to 19-7 overall and 7-0 in the Southwestern Conference. Belleville West fell to 8-9, including 3-4 in league play.
Tied 1-1 entering the sixth, Amelia Wilfong reached on an error to start the rally, and Bryar Ellinger followed with a bunt single.
Brooke Burris delivered the go-ahead hit with a two-run double to center, making it 3-1. Burris later scored on an errant throw following Lily Stone's bunt single to extend the lead to 4-1.
After Sophie Antonini singled, Savanna Lewis added another bunt single that brought home Stone for a 5-1 advantage.
Edwardsville capped the inning on an RBI double by Maksine Straub and an RBI infield single from Ellinger to make it 7-1.
Straub added a two-run double in the seventh to push the lead to 9-1 and finished 2 for 4 with four RBI.
Belleville West scored three runs in its final at-bat but could not close the gap.
The Tigers outhit the Maroons 11-3.
Antonini went 3 for 4, while Lewis and Ellinger each had two hits and an RBI. Burris drove in two runs.
Marley Fox earned the win, allowing one unearned run on three hits over six innings. She struck out seven and walked three.
