Edwardsville baseball sweeps East St. Louis, moves closer to SWC title

May 7-The Edwardsville baseball team moved two steps closer to a seventh straight Southwestern Conference championship.

The Tigers swept East St. Louis 12-2 and 19-1 in a mid-week doubleheader May 6 at Tom Pile Field inside the District 7 Sports Complex.

EHS improved to 16-8 overall and 9-1 in the SWC.

With one league series remaining against Collinsville next week, Edwardsville sits ahead of O'Fallon, Belleville West and Collinsville in the conference standings. A win in either game against the Kahoks would clinch at least a share of the SWC championship, while a sweep would give the Tigers the title outright.

In the opener, Edwardsville needed just seven hits in the 12-2 win, taking advantage of five East St. Louis errors and 11 walks.

Hunter Baugh went 1-for-1 with three RBI, while Parker Gill, Max McMichael and Zane Maxwell each had a hit and two RBI. Andrew McCutchen and Ty Hunt each added a hit and an RBI.

Jax Andreas earned the win, throwing three scoreless innings. He allowed two hits, struck out five and walked two.

Calyx Wise pitched the final three innings, allowing two unearned runs on one hit. He struck out nine and walked one.

In the second game, Edwardsville rolled to a 19-1 win behind nine hits while capitalizing on six East St. Louis errors and 10 walks.

Nolan Vojack and Tyson Wampler each had two hits and three RBI. Gill and Aidan May each had a hit and two RBI, Sean Murphy had a hit and an RBI and Joel Fields also drove in a run.

Brady Hasquin earned the win, going two innings and allowing one unearned run on two hits. He struck out two and walked one.

Carter Grote struck out four over two innings of relief and allowed one hit.

Edwardsville will host the Tiger Classic this weekend, opening against Teutopolis at 7 p.m. May 8 at Tom Pile Field.

The Tigers will play Glenwood at 10 a.m. May 9, followed by Highland.
