St. Anthony rallies in Glen Carbon to end Father McGivney home streak
May 7-St. Anthony's scored three runs in the seventh inning and added another in the eighth to rally past Father McGivney for an 11-10 win Thursday in Glen Carbon.
Father McGivney fell to 18-6, while St. Anthony's improved to 16-6.
The loss snapped Father McGivney's 60-game home winning streak, which dated to a 6-1 loss to St. Joseph-Ogden on March 17, 2022. The streak is an IHSA state record.
The Griffins led 10-7 after scoring three runs in the sixth inning. Isaac Wendler hit a two-run home run and Grant Reed added an RBI single during the inning.
St. Anthony answered in the seventh with a two-run home run by Chase Dorris and later tied the game on an error.
In the eighth inning, Aiden Lauritzen hit a solo home run to right field to give St. Anthony an 11-10 lead.
Father McGivney went down in order in the bottom of the eighth.
The Griffins outhit St. Anthony 11-8.
Wendler finished 2 for 4 with a double, home run and four RBIs, while Ty Etcheson went 2 for 4 with a double, home run and three RBIs. Scott Phelps was 2 for 4 with two doubles and an RBI.
Grant Reed and Jack Rolves each drove in a run.
Mater Dei 13, Metro-East Lutheran 8 - Mater Dei scored three runs in the fifth inning and erupted for seven more in the sixth to rally past Metro-East Lutheran 13-8 on Thursday in Breese.
Metro-East Lutheran fell to 8-10, while Mater Dei improved to 12-13.
MELHS led 7-3 after four innings before Mater Dei mounted its comeback.
Mater Dei capitalized on seven Metro-East Lutheran errors, which led to eight unearned runs, and also took advantage of five walks.
Sammy Huber led the Metro-East Lutheran offense, going 2 for 2 with two RBIs.
Charlie Frey was 2 for 4 with an RBI, while Matthew Redden and Matthew Barber each had a hit and RBI. Ryan Phillippe, Cooper Italiano, Jackson Huber and Drake Luebbert each added a hit.
SOFTBALL
Hillsboro 13, Father McGivney 0 - Hillsboro broke the game open with an eight-run second inning and defeated Father McGivney 13-0 in five innings Thursday in Glen Carbon.
Father McGivney dropped to 9-9, while Hillsboro improved to 16-6.
Morgan Zobrist and Nora Mensing accounted for Father McGivney's only hits.
