MONDAY SOCCER: Delaney Griffin's hat trick lifts Civic Memorial past Highland

May 12-Delaney Griffin was back at it Monday for the Civic Memorial girls soccer team. The senior scored three goals and helped CM knock off Highland 5-2 in Mississippi Valley Conference action in Highland.

CM, which led 2-1 at halftime, saw Highland rally to tie it 2-2 early in the second half, but then pulled away down the stretch.

"We started a little slow," CM coach Eric Zyung said. "That's a credit to Highland. We didn't match their energy early.

"Once we settled in, we did some great things with possession."

Landree Wallace scored the other two Eagles goals, including the first one in the 14th minute, assisted by Averie Huebner.

Griffin scored in the 32nd minute for the Eagles, assisted by Kynlee Barnett.

In the second half, Griffin scored in the 47th minute on a direct free kick, then scored two minutes later off a corner kick by teammate Sara Aiello.

Griffin has 12 goals on the season.

Wallace capped the CM coring in the 540th minute, assisted by Allie Kamp.

Highland's Madalyn Roach scored both her team's goals, one in each half. CM goalie Carlina McGaughey made one save.

The Eagles are 10-8-1 overall and 6-2 in the Valley. They will play Tuesday at Waterloo, then will host Triad Thursday in their final MVC game ever. They conference is disbanding after 54 years following this school year and CM will be joining the Cahokia Conference Mississippi Divisions.

Marquette 2, Gibault 2 - Marquette ended its regular season 13-4-3 with the tie in Waterloo after coming from a goal down twice

The Explorers spotted Gibault a 1-0 lead early on a goal by Karmon Grohmann in the fourth minute.

Three minutes later, Marquette tied it 1-1 when Alivia Noss scored off an assist from Emily Hough after a corner kick by teammate Izzi Hough.

The Hawks took a 2-1 lead in the 46th minute when Grohmann scored again, her second of the game and 18th of the season.

Again, Marquette rallied. Stella Sims, assisted by Remmi Copeland, scored the equalizer in the 59th minute.

"I was happy with the way we found a way to come back and get the tie," Marquette coach Brian Hoener said, "but we had to use too much energy chasing the game."

Marquette is undefeated in its last 10 games and had a nine-game winning streak heading into Monday's game. The Explorers will now be off until May 22 when they will play in the championship game of their own Class 1A IHSA regional against the winner of a semifinal game between Gillespie and Roxana. Marquette originally was scheduled to meet East Alton-Wood river in a semifinal on May 19, but EA-WR elected to forfeit that game.

"This was a good chance to see where we are and gives us time to get ready for the regional," Hoener said.

Southwestern 4, Gillespie 3 (OT) - Southwestern rallied with two goals in the second overtime period to edge Gillespie in the South Central Conference game.

Ava Ballard's goal in the 97th minute was the game winner for the Piasa Birds.

With teh game tied 2-2 after regulation, two 10-minute overtime periods were played to completion.

Gillespie took a 3-2 lead early in the first overtime on a penalty kick, but Maddie Gordon tied it for Southwestern in the 92nd minute in the second OT, setting up teammate Ballard's game winning goal.

"We played very well," Southwestern coach Steve Mitchell said. "We're moving in the right direction. The kids are playing hard."

Ballard gave Southwestern a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute. The Piasa Birds went up 2-0 in the 28th minute on a goal by Chloe Glover. The Miners rallied in the second half with a goal in the 51st minute and the tying goal on a penalty kick in the 79th minute.

Gillespie is 11-4 overall and 4-3 in the South Central Conference. Southwestern is 7-11 overall and 3-5 in the SCC. The Birds will host Breese Central Tuesday.
