TUESDAY SOCCER: Waterloo slips past CM; Edwardsville edges O'Fallon in PKs
May 13-The Civic Memorial girls soccer team is playing its best soccer of the season at the best time of the season.
Even though they suffered a one-goal defeat to Waterloo Tuesday, CM coach Eric Zyung was enthusiastic about his team's effort against the Bulldogs. Waterloo (17-1) is No. 3 in the latest MaxPreps Class 2A state rankings.
"The girls battled tough tonight," Zyung said. "We're playing our best soccer heading into the postseason."
The postseason for CM is in smaller Class 1A this season. It will begin Tuesday at home against Southwestern in a semifinal game of the Bethalto 1A regional at Hauser Field. CM (10-8-1) is No. 14 in the MaxPreps Class 1A state rankings.
CM will close its regular season Thursday at home against Triad.
Tuesday at Waterloo, the Eagles were facing a Bulldogs team with only a loss to perennial power Triad in 18 games. CM trailed 3-2 at halftime.
Landree Wallace scored all three goals for CM. In the first half, she scored off an assist from Payton Meyers in the sixth minute and again off an assist from goalie Bryleigh Marshall in the 14th minute.
In the second half, Wallace scored from an assist by teammate Delaney Griffin.
Wallace, a sophomore has scored 18 goals on the season.
Waterloo, which edged CM 1-0 earlier this season, got three goals from Nichole Gum and one from Megan Young.
Edwardsville over O'Fallon - Gabby Thompson converted Edwardsville's fourth penalty kick as the Tigers clinched a share of the Southwestern Conference championship with a scoreless draw and 4-2 penalty-kick shootout road win over O'Fallon Tuesday.
It is the second consecutive season EHS and O'Fallon have shared the conference championship. It is the fifth title in program history for the Tigers and the sixth straight for the Panthers.
Edwardsville improved to 11-3-2 overall and 9-1 in the SWC, while O'Fallon dropped to 12-3-3 and also finished 9-1 in league play. After 100 minutes of scoreless soccer, including two 10-minute overtime periods, the teams moved to a penalty-kick shootout.
Edwardsville converted its first four attempts. Madison Kline, Kaylee Spiller and Grace Hughes each scored before Thompson ended the match with the Tigers leading 3-2 entering the fourth round.
Bellevillle West 7, Alton 1 - Belleville West scored three goals in each half en route to its Southwestern Conference win over Alton.
Emerson Morris scored a pair of goals for West, Other Maroons goals were by Aubrie Hohm, Livi Schaffer, Lucy Seneczyn and Hannah Sternau.
Grace Massey scored Alton's goal in the 52nd minute, assisted by Jillian Dwiggins.
Alton is 3-15 overall and 0-9 in the SWC. The Redbirds will play host to West Thursday in their regular season finale and will open the IHSA Class 2A regional Saturday in Jacksonville.
