Tate Powell still a Dog, moves to 3-0 with win for Alton Legion

Tate Powell made nine appearances out of the Bulldogs' bullpen without the reward of a win for Staunton baseball this spring. He is now 3 for 3 as a starting pitcher for Alton Legion Post 126.

Powell pushed his record to 3-0 before Joe Stephan finished the shutout in Alton's 6-0 victory over Maryland Heights (Mo.) Post 213 on Tuesday night at Hopkins Field in Alton. Alton is 8-3 and welcomes 8-2 Aviston to The Hop at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Maryland Heights, which also lost to Alton 14-0 on June 6 in Missouri, stays winless at 0-7.

After a 0-0 record with 32 strikeouts and six walks in 18 2/3 relief innings in the high school season for Staunton, Powell has brought his swing-and-miss stuff to Alton Legion. In 11 2/3 innings from five appearances including three starts, Powell has 22 strikeouts while giving six hits and five walks for a 0.60 ERA.

Powell fanned seven of the 11 Maryland Heights batters he faced with two walks and no hits before departing with a 2-0 lead after three innings. Joe Stephan completed the task by working a four-inning save. Stephan allowed no runs on two hits, one walk and five strikeouts in four innings.

Alton doubled its three-run lead with three runs in the sixth inning to wrap up a 10-hit attack. Johnny Kunz had three hits and Jayce Steinkuehler had two hits for Alton, which picked up three stolen bases and three runs scored from leadoff hitter Dagan Cordes.
