Edward Cabrera Injury: Craig Counsell Delivers Update on Injured Cubs Pitcher
The Chicago Cubs received an encouraging update on Edward Cabrera's recovery on Wednesday. Manager Craig Counsell said the club hopes the right-hander can begin throwing off a bullpen mound before the All-Star break.
The update offers the clearest indication yet that Cabrera's rehabilitation is moving in the right direction. It also gives Chicago a realistic target as the club monitors one of its key starting pitchers.
Cabrera landed on the 15-day injured list after straining his left hamstring while covering first base. The Cubs are expected to remain cautious as they work to avoid another setback before he returns.
Counsell's comments do not guarantee Cabrera will return immediately after the All-Star break. They do, however, represent another important step in the recovery process.

The 28-year-old joined the Cubs before the 2026 season after spending five years with the Miami Marlins. He quickly became an important part of Chicago's rotation with his power fastball and ability to generate strikeouts.
His absence has forced the Cubs to rely on their pitching depth during a demanding stretch of the schedule. A successful bullpen session before the All-Star break would move him another step closer to returning.
The Chicago Cubs entered July 1 with a 48-38 record, sitting second in the National League Central and 4.5 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers. They remain firmly in the National League Wild Card race despite dealing with multiple injuries to the starting rotation.
Getting Cabrera back after the All-Star break would provide another boost for a club trying to close the gap in the division. For now, Chicago will continue monitoring his progress as he works toward throwing his first bullpen session before the break.
