Harry Kane Goes Viral for Raspy Interview After England's Win Over Mexico
England managed to outlast a spirited attack from Mexico in the Round of 16, with Harry Kane delivering what was the game-winning goal from his penalty kick in the second half.
Kane had been the hero in previous matches and was once again, but teammate Jude Bellingham scored twice in the first half to give England a 2-0 lead. Mexico fired back with a Julian Quinones goal just before halftime, to make the matchup much more competitive in the second half.
Before the penalty, Kane and England were forced to play with only 10 men, due to a red card given out to Jarell Quansah at the 54-minute mark. Mexico continued to attack and had several close shots near the goal, but couldn’t find the net, ultimately losing 3-2.
And after the match, Kane was immediately interviewed about the big win to move his team on to the quarterfinal against Norway, but he was on the verge of losing his voice, making for a comical post-match conversation.

Kane did his best to answer all of the questions, but immediately told the interviewer, “My voice is gone,” as his words became indistinguishable at times.
“It was a crazy game … I can’t really talk,” Kane said, even laughing at himself as his voice went in and out on his responses.
“All the occasion, the team, everything against us. We found a way,” he said regarding the fierce battle in Mexico’s home stadium.
“Just look at them here. Incredible. Unbelievable support. I’m speechless. I can’t even talk, so,” Kane said of the England fans, before the interviewer finally allowed him to leave to celebrate.
BBC Sports shared the interview on X, which quickly racked up over 95,000 likes and 1,000 comments. Many reacted to the raspy-voiced Kane, comparing it to various fictional characters like Sesame Street’s Bert or Scooby-Doo.
Some commenters wrote, “Haha sounds like you're interviewing Mickey Mouse,” and “sounding like Kermit the Frog.”
“Give the man a throat lozenge for goodness sake, lol! What a night!” someone wrote on X.
“This is why he’s the captain. Empty tank, no voice left, still stood there talking football with everything he had. Respect, Harry,” one commenter wrote.
“This interview has secured the man a knighthood if he somehow didn't have one in the bag already. What a legend,” another commenter said.
Kane clearly gave everything he had in the match against Mexico, and his penalty goal became another heroic moment in his World Cup career. He’s now tallied six goals, putting him one goal behind France’s Kylian Mbappe, Norway’s Erling Haaland, and Argentina’s Lionel Messi.
That should make it an interesting race for the Golden Boot, awarded to the top goalscorer at the World Cup.
The good news for Kane is that he’ll now have some time to rest his voice. England is set to battle Haaland and Norway in their quarterfinal match on Saturday, July 11. That should be another challenging game, with Haaland scoring two goals to lead his team to a stunning upset of Brazil in the Round of 16.
