Five arrested, woman hospitalized after late-night shooting at Urbana apartment complex parking lot

URBANA - Five people were arrested after a late-night shooting that sent an 18-year-old woman to the hospital.

At 11:11 p.m. Tuesday, police in Urbana responded to shots fired in the 1200 block of Brookstone Court and recovered around 30 spent shell casings.

Soon thereafter, the victim arrived at Carle Foundation Hospital with a gunshot wound. Police said she had been shot in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 1200 block of Brookstone Court. Her current condition has not been released.

Urbana Police executed multiple search warrants that resulted in the recovery of four firearms, including one equipped with a "switch" attachment, an illegal conversion device that transforms a semiautomatic pistol into a fully automatic weapon.

The investigation, which included foot pursuits, resulted in the arrest of five individuals, including four who were preliminarily charged with possession of a machine gun and resisting arrest: Issaiah Tapscott, 20; Martell Johnson, 19; Joel Hayes, 19; and Brendon Brown, 18. A 17-year-old also was arrested and charged with possession of a machine gun.

The Champaign Police Department, Champaign County Sheriff's Office, University of Illinois Police Department and Illinois State Police assisted Urbana during the investigation.
