Criddle’s Riddles: Remember Illini’s last Big Ten title?

The likes of coach Bob Zuppke and halfback Harold “Red” Grange made the Illinois Fighting Illini one of the legendary football programs during the first half of the 20th century.

In all, Illinois won national football championships five times, the Big Ten title 15 times and the Rose Bowl in 1946, 1951 and 1963.

Here’s today’s question: When was the last time the Illini won the Big Ten football championship and who was the coach?

Yesterday’s answer: The East St. Louis Flyers have won seven state football championships. The last one came when they won Class 7A state title in 2008 under coach Darren Sunkett. The Flyers first six state titles came under legendary coach Bob Shannon, who led East St. Louis to state crowns in 1979, 1983-85, 1989 and 1991. East St. Louis has also finished second three times.
