Today’s question: Affirmed won the Triple Crown in 1978, beating the same horse in each of the three races. Which horse came in second each race?
Yesterday’s question and answer: On May 31, 1987, Wayne Gretzky, captain of the Edmonton Oilers, was handed the Stanley Cup after winning Game 7 3-1 against the Philadelphia Flyers. This was Edmonton’s third Stanley Cup championship in four years. The “Great” Gretzky then made a tremendous gesture by handing the Stanley Cup directly to which player? The answer is Steve Smith. The back story on this showing to true sportsmanship is this. Smith was the defenseman the year before accidentally scored on his own net in the third period of Game 7 against the Calgary Flames in the conference final. This mistake cost Edmonton a chance for three straight championships. The worst of it was that Smith’s own goal happened on his birthday. Edmonton would go on to win the Stanley Cup again in 1988, making it four titles in five years. Smith continued to play with Edmonton until 1991, when he was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks.
