McKendree has 10 programs on academic all-conference list

McKendree University had 10 of its athletic programs honored Tuesday by the Great Lakes Valley Conference with Team Academic All-GLVC accolades for 2015-16.

This marks the third year in a row that McKendree has put 10 of its athletic programs on the Team Academic All-GLVC list. The Bearcats joined six other GLVC institutions to reach double figures in its total of team honorees for 2015-16. To be eligible for Team Academic All-GLVC accolades, a varsity program for a GLVC-sponsored sport must maintain a 3.30 grade-point average for the academic year.

“We are proud of what our athletic teams have accomplished in the classroom,” saidChuck Brueggemann, director of athletics at McKendree. “They have taken the word ‘teamwork’ and applied it not only in their athletic performance, but in their academic achievements as well. At McKendree University our athletes are students first, in so they are expected to dedicate themselves to their studies. The honors announced today certainly show that our student-athletes are committed and determined in making their academic goals a reality.”

Half of McKendree’s 10 honored teams accumulated a team grade-point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. The Bearcat women’s soccer squad led the way in the classroom during the 2015-16 academic year as its team members combined for a 3.68 GPA. Women’s golf was close behind at 3.67, followed by women’s volleyball at 3.63. The McKendree softball (3.58) and women’s basketball (3.51) teams also topped the 3.5 GPA mark.

Also being recognized for team academic success in the classroom for McKendree include: baseball (3.39), women’s track and field (3.38), women’s tennis (3.36), men’s cross country (3.36) and women’s cross country (3.36).

In all, the GLVC recognized a total of 137 men’s and women’s programs from its 16 member institutions with Team Academic All-GLVC honors for 2015-16. That number eclipsed the league’s previous record of 119 programs honored a year ago. Lewis University set a new GLVC record by boasting 13 team honorees this year. Bellarmine University, Rockhurst University and Truman State University each had 11 teams recognized, while McKendree joined Drury University and Maryville University with 10 team honored programs in 2015-16. Women’s volleyball had the highest number of programs honored for an individual sport, with 15 of the GLVC’s 16 squads collecting Team Academic All-GLVC mention.

On Monday, McKendree had 185 student-athletes receive individual Academic All-GLVC honors from the conference.
