The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Cougars closed out the nonconference regular season schedule Tuesday with a 7-2 loss to Saint Louis at the Billiken Sports Center.
The Cougars left at least one runner on base in every inning and stranded 11 overall. SIUE outhit the Billikens 7-6.
“I’m very disappointed,” said SIUE coach Sandy Montgomery.
SIUE, 38-12, will look to rebound this weekend for a three-game series to close out the Ohio Valley Conference regular season at Eastern Illinois.

“I do know we will be ready for this weekend,” Montgomery said.
The Cougars lead the OVC with a 19-4 league record and will be looking to clinch the top seed for the conference tournament. One more OVC win will break SIUE’s mark for most OVC wins in a single season.
On Tuesday, Saint Louis hurler Maddie Baalman was the winning pitcher, improving to 10-6. She struck out three and walked five. Baylee Douglass took the loss for the Cougars and is now 16-6. She struck out four and walked two.
Allie McFarland’s home run was all the Billikens needed in the win as Saint Louis led 3-0 after the first inning. Her two-run homer was her eighth of the season. The Billikens improved to 33-16.
SIUE scored single tallies in the second and seventh inning.
A run-scoring triple by Alex McDavid in the seventh was her second triple and 18th extra-base hit of the season.
LU-Belleville begins AMC tourney play
The Lindenwood University–Belleville softball team has captured the regular season American Midwest Conference championship, earning an automatic bid to the NAIA National Championship opening round. The Lady Lynx also clinched the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament and become the first female team to win a conference championship in school history.
LU-Belleville (28-14) will take on the No. 8 seed Williams Baptist at 9 a.m. Wednesday in Columbia, Mo. The Lady Lynx will look to make history once again this week as they look for their first conference tournament championship.
Bearcats to host Quincy in 9-inning tilt
The McKendree University baseball team will host Quincy University for one nine-inning game on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Hypes Field.
The Wednesday date was originally scheduled to be a doubleheader between the Bearcats and Hawks, after weather postponed a three-game weekend series between the two schools back on Feb. 28-March 1. This will be the third meeting of the season between McKendree and Quincy. The Hawks won both ends of a nonconference doubleheader on April 7 in Quincy by the scores of 2-1 and 7-1.
Wednesday’s contest will mark the beginning of a season-ending, five-game home stand for McKendree. The Bearcats will also host Bellarmine Univeristy in the final Great Lakes Valley Conference series of the year May 2-3 at Hypes Field. Senior Day is set for Sunday, with the program’s seniors to be honored between games of the doubleheader.
SUIE to play at Western Illinois
The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Cougars will travel to Macomb for a Wednesday game at Western Illinois before playing a four-game weekend series against Missouri Valley foe Illinois State.
SIUE if fresh off scoring a come-from-behind 6-2 win over Tennessee-Martin on Sunday to sweep the three-game Ohio Valley Conference series.
The Cougars improved to 15-9 in OVC play and 15-21 overall. The Cougars have swept three OVC series this season. The win marked the third consecutive series sweep of SIUE over UT-Martin in Edwardsville.
