SIUE’s La’Derrick Ward named OVC athlete of the year

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – SIUE track and field's La'Derrick Ward was named the Ohio Valley Conference Male Field Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive season.

Ward holds the best mark in the OVC in the long jump at 25 feet, 2.75 inches. He also is No. 16 nationally as well as 11th in the NCAA West region.

Ward has competed in the Tom Botts Invitational and the SIUE Gateway Invite this season, winning the long jump in both meets.

"We're very pleased with what he has done so far," said head coach Eileen McAllister. "He definitely has a lot more in the tank, and we expect to see that in the next couple of weeks. It's fantastic for him to be where he is nationally, and we want him to continue to improve."

SIUE track and field competes in the OVC Outdoor Championship Friday and Saturday in Clarksville, Tenn. The event is hosted by Austin Peay.
