McKendree places school record number on academic all-GLVC list
McKendree University had a school-record 185 student-athletes earn Academic All-Conference honors for 2014-15 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The league announced its list of Academic All-GLVC recipients for the recently-completed academic year.
The 185 McKendree student-athletes who received the 2014-15 honor eclipsed the institution’s previous mark of 181, set last year. McKendree had the fourth-highest total of honorees among the 18-member conference (16 full members plus two associate members for football) this year. In all, a total of 2,427 student-athletes from GLVC institutions garnered Academic All-Conference accolades.
For the first time in its three years as members of the GLVC, McKendree led all conference schools by having the most honorees in an individual sport for the entire year. The Bearcats had the most Academic All-GLVC recipients in women’s soccer (26), women’s golf (14), men’s golf (nine), women’s tennis (nine) and men’s tennis (eight).
“Over the years, the student-athletes at McKendree have built a tradition of hard work both in the classroom and in the athletic arena,” said Chuck Brueggemann, director of athletics at McKendree. “That tradition is proven once again by the record-setting numbers released today by the GLVC. This is a testament to the commitment made by our coaches, our student-athletes and our support staff in building a complete and well-rounded experience both athletically and academically. The student-athletes honored today are excellent representatives of McKendree University, and this is another great day to be a Bearcat!”
McKendree has seen its total number of Academic All-GLVC honorees increase in each of its three years in the conference. The Bearcats had 159 student-athletes who received the award in 2012-13 before pushing that number to 181 recipients last year.
The Academic All-GLVC honor is given to student-athletes who have completed two semesters at their respective institutions and have maintained a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average. The 2,427 Academic All-GLVC recipients in 2014-15 is a new league-record, topping the old mark of 2,360 honorees from last year. A total of 118 GLVC student-athletes registered a perfect 4.0 grade-point average in 2014-15, including six from McKendree.
Lewis University led all conference institutions with 214 Academic All-GLVC honorees in 2014-15. Truman State University was next with 207 recipients, followed by the University of Indianapolis with 206. McKendree was next with its 185 awardees as Maryville University rounded out the top five with 177. In all three years of its membership within the conference, McKendree has placed in the top five among all institutions in total Academic All-GLVC recipients.
